AUTOMATIC Curated by Chris Fite-Wassilak & Gavin Murphy Artists taking part include: Karl Burke (IRL), Alicia Frankovich (NZ), Candice Jacobs (UK), Gereon Krebber (GER), Ruth Proctor (UK), Linda Quinlan (IRL), Berndnaut Smilde (NL) Automatic is a two-part installation by a transient collective of international artists, opening first in AutoItalia Southeast on 4 September 2009, reconvening in Dublin's Pallas Contemporary Projects for 23 October 2009. Movements within art describe a continual series of temporary consolidations, cumulative processes that condense into the exhibition in front of you before dispersing. This nomadic tendency is countered and complicated by the transformations that the artists of Automatic undertake, presenting work that explores the phenomenology of an immediate impact and emphasizes personal, sensory experience. Chris Fite-Wassilak is a London-based curator and writer for Frieze and Circa, among other titles. Gavin Murphy is a Dublin-based artist and is co-curator of Pallas Contemporary Projects. They have previously collaborated on House Projects - a series of seven exhibitions (2007) and publication (2008). Pallas Contemporary Projects is a not-for-profit, publicly funded gallery space, which focuses on developing exchanges between Irish and international artists with a strong conceptual approach working in different media. It was set up to allow artists a space to experiment and take risks with their practice, and is intrinsically connected with the artistic process of production. Most of its exhibitions evolve in relation to the idiosyncratic specifics of the gallery space and artists benefit from an extended period of on-site work in which to test and try out ideas ahead of their public exhibition. |
